Sustained Attention Test The Sustained Attention Test is a computer-based task designed to measure a person's ability to withhold responses to infrequent and unpredictable stimuli during a period of rapid and rhythmic responding to frequent stimuli. As its name implies, the creators of the task interpret performance as recording the ability to sustain attention, which they define as the ability to self-sustain mindful, conscious processing of stimuli whose repetitive, non-arousing qualities would otherwise lead to habituation and distraction to other stimuli". There are two different stages in this test named as “Find number 4” condition in which participant has to make correct responses by clicking the left mouse button as soon as a stimuli with digit 4 in it appears on the screen and the second one is “Find non zero number” condition in which participant has to make a response as soon as he sees any digit other than a zero in the stimuli presented on the screen.
Test Phase Non-Zero Condition(NZ) : In this condition, a series of six digits is presented, containing mostly Zeros. A user has to see if it has any non-zero number in that. In case there is any non-zero number in the presented series, patient is supposed to respond with the Left click, right click otherwise. Specific-Condition(SP) : In this condition, a series of six digits is presented, containing different numbers. A user has to see if it has the number “4” as one of the series element. In case there is a digit 4 in the presented series, patient is supposed to respond with the Left click, right click otherwise.
When a response is made during the test, though there is no text coming up on the screen to acknowledge that, but the stimuli will be changed as soon as the response was made.
